Partner Visa(Subclasses 820 & 801)

Permits the partner or spouse of a citizen, permanent resident, or qualified New Zealander to reside in Australia.
Together, you apply for the temporary and permanent partner visas.

Partner visa (Temporary)

Subclass 820

This visa allows the de facto partner or spouse of an Australian citizen, permanent resident of Australia, or qualified New Zealand citizen to temporarily remain in Australia. This visa is the initial step towards obtaining a permanent Partner visa (subclass 801).

Subclass 801

This visa allows the de facto partner or spouse of an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or qualified New Zealand citizen to remain permanently in Australia. It is often reserved for those who already have a temporary Partner visa (subclass 820).

Visa Benefits

  • Depending on your situation and the documentation you show, you may be given a stay of three, six, or twelve months.
  • During your stay, you can visit friends and relatives, cruise, or take a vacation.
  • Citizens of the People’s Republic of China and Japan are eligible for the frequent traveller programme.

Processing Time

  • 25% of applications: 6 Months
  • 50% of applications: 9-11 Months
  • 75% of applications: 16-18 Months
  • 90% of applications: 25-37 Months

You Must

  • You must possess a temporary Partner visa (subclass 820) or Dependent Child visa (subclass 445)
  • In most situations, you must maintain an ongoing and genuine connection with your sponsor.
